NSW Surf Life Saving: Inspiring volunteer stories

Like many volunteers Hanna began surf life saving after recognising the impact it had on her, but has found that volunteering has brought many benefits into her life. 

“I wanted to give back to the community that has given me so much. I’ve found that the skills I’ve learned from surf life saving has helped me in my world outside. Skills like communication, leadership and the ability to be in control of a situation - not to panic and to think carefully.”  Hana, Surf Life Saving volunteer.

Patrolling a beach is a great way to make new friends, remain physically active and, most importantly, save lives. To qualify as a surf lifesaver, you must obtain a Bronze Medallion. 

Hanna can’t say enough positive things about the experience. 

“To anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer surf lifesaver just do it. It sounds clichéd but that’s it. It can be uncomfortable and confronting and there can be tricky situations on the beach, but it’s the best thing you’ll ever do.”
