Optical radiation Ex op
Optical radiation Ex op test determines whether the emitted optical radiation energy from equipment could ignite a specific explosive atmosphere.
Testing technique
Optical radiation tests determine whether the emitted optical radiation energy from equipment could ignite a specific explosive atmosphere.
Inherently safe optical radiation is when the measured visible or infrared emitted radiation is incapable of producing sufficient energy to ignite the explosive atmosphere. The optical radiated or irradiance power does not exceed the limit as stated in the Standard.
Protected optical radiation is when the visible or infrared radiation inside the optical fibre or other transmission medium, is confined and it cannot escape from the confinement.
Optical system with interlock is a system designed to confine the visible or infrared radiation inside the optical fibre or other transmission medium. Interlock cut-off is provided to reduce the unconfined beam strength to safe levels within a specified time.
Testing to standards
We can carry out tests in accordance with the requirements of International Standard IEC 60079-28 or Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 60079.28. This standard is applied in conjunction with General requirements standard IEC 60079-0 or AS/NZS 60079.0, respectively.
Types of protection
This type of protection covers Group I, Group II and Group III and all equipment protection levels (EPL Ma, Ga, Da, Mb, Gb, Db, Gc, Dc).
There are three types of protection:
- “op is” - inherently safe optical radiation
- “op pr” - protected optical radiation
- “op sh” - optical system with interlock.

Getting the test results
The results of our testing are presented in a test report that is endorsed by our local Australian laboratory accreditation body, NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia).
When product sample testing, design assessment (Ex test report) and quality assessment (quality assessment report) are successfully completed, an Ex Certificate of Conformity (IECEx or ANZEx) is issued by TestSafe.
