Introduction
The City of Parramatta has created a ‘smart street’ in Parramatta’s CBD. Phillip Street has been transformed, using smart technologies like connected street furniture, smart irrigation, and environmental monitoring.
The changes have improved the amenity and accessibility of the street, making it a great place for residents, workers, and visitors to enjoy.
Challenge
Council research showed that local residents, workers and visitors want more outdoor dining, vibrancy, cafes, shade, greenery and seating in the Parramatta CBD.
Solution
A core driver for the upgrade of Phillip Street was to demonstrate multiple Council plans and strategies in action.
The City of Parramatta has transformed Phillip Street into a ‘smart street’ that is accessible, cooler and gives residents new ways to enjoy the space.
The street has been widened to make more space for pedestrians and outdoor dining to enjoy the CBD.
Mature street trees have been planted and rain gardens are helping green and cool the street during Parramatta’s warm summer months.
The street includes:
- blown fibre and extra conduits for other service providers to use. This supports the future connectivity needs of the area
- multi-function poles
- street furniture with built-in USB charging ports
- smart irrigation to support landscaping
- CCTV
- environmental monitoring
- water misting for temperature cooling.
Outcomes
The project has set a new standard for street upgrades in Parramatta.
Council was able to showcase delivery of its ambitions for the Parramatta CBD in one place.
Phillip Street now provides a significant opportunity to pilot the use of smart technology in an urban streetscape environment.
