Recognition under the East Coast Electrician's scheme
Recognition under the East Coast Electrician's scheme applies to some interstate licence holders. Find out if your licence is eligible.
Working in NSW
If you hold one of the following:
- Unrestricted electrician’s licence held by an individual person, under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 of the Australian Capital Territory.
- Unrestricted electrical mechanic licence and an electrical contractor licence, both held by the same individual, under the Electricity Safety Act 2002 of Queensland.
- An electrician’s licence held by an electrical installation worker who is also a registered electrical contractor under the Electricity Safety Act 1998 of Victoria.
You can apply for the NSW equivalent, which is an endorsed contractor licence. This authorises a person to do electrical wiring work without supervision, under the NSW Home Building Act 1989.
If you hold one of the following:
- unrestricted electrical mechanic licence held by an individual person under the Electricity Safety Act 2002 of Queensland or
- an electrician’s licence held by an electrical installation worker under the Electricity Safety Act 1998 of Victoria,
you can apply for the NSW equivalent, which is a qualified supervisor certificate. This authorises a person to do electrical wiring work without supervision under the NSW Home Building Act 1989.
Queensland, Victorian or ACT (Australian Capital Territory) electricians that have moved to NSW
If you are an electrician holding a recognised licence and move your primary place of residence to NSW, you will need to apply for a NSW licence using the mutual recognition application form.

NSW electricians working in Queensland
If you hold one of the following NSW electrical licence types:
- qualified supervisor certificate
- endorsed contractor licence
you are permitted to work in Queensland and will be employed as an electrical mechanic (electrician) in Queensland.
Note: to be a contractor in Queensland, you need to apply for the Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence under Mutual Recognition.

NSW electricians working in Victoria
If you hold one of the following NSW electrical licence types:
- qualified supervisor certificate
- endorsed contractor licence
you are permitted to work in Victoria.
Note: You will need to first notify Energy Safe Victoria to receive access to the online system to lodge a safety compliance certificate when you have completed work. You should also check any other Victorian requirements to do work.
