Nursing and midwifery services in Far West LHD

Our nurses and midwives work with families, carers and a range of other health professionals to provide a wide range of services through our facilities, clinics and in the community.

Nursing services

Nurses are highly skilled health workers with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. They provide a wide range of services in our health facilities, clinics and the community.

Nurses coordinate and provide clinical care in all of our hospitals and multipurpose services.

Nurses are responsible for the emergency and first aid care in our remote facilities with support from the Royal Flying Doctor Service and NSW Ambulance.

Nurses organise care in clinics such as colonoscopy, renal and wound clinics at Broken Hill Health Service. They also support Royal Flying Doctor Service clinics in rural and remote communities.

They can visit people in their homes, for example to help with medication or wound care. They can also work in places like schools and community health centres.

The Community Health Centre in Broken Hill provides a child and family health nursing service. It offers drop-in clinics, child development checks, immunisations, and home visits for new babies.

Midwifery and maternity services

All pregnant women in the Far West LHD have free access to their own midwife throughout their pregnancy, birth and early weeks of parenting through the Broken Hill Midwifery Group Practice.

Women expected to have a low-to-medium risk birth can give birth in Broken Hill Hospital.

We work closely with birth hospitals and neo-natal intensive care in Adelaide for women expected to have higher risk births.

Broken Hill Health Service offers the following maternity services: 

  • antenatal care from early pregnancy and postnatal care to 2 weeks post-birth
  • parenting classes
  • coordinated care for women with early pregnancy complications within the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS)
  • obstetric and paediatric medical service
  • special care nursery services
  • lactation consultant.

Bree, Registered Midwife: I am a Midwifery Group Practice midwife.

Shae, Registered Midwife: I'm a registered midwife in the maternity unit.

Donna, Registered Midwife: I'm a midwife in the Midwifery Group Practice here in Broken Hill.

Chelsea, Clinical Midwifery Consultant: I'm the clinical midwifery consultant for Far West Local Health District.

Bree: I became a midwife because I had that passion to help people and I knew I wanted to give something back to the community.

Donna: I'm a midwife because I wanted to make a difference in people's lives and one of the impacts I make is showing lots of support to the women that I care for. 

Chelsea: I've always been really interested in how babies were born and how families learn how to become mums and dads.

Shae: Being with women and their families in that moment when they meet their baby is incredible and something that I feel very privileged to be a part of.

Bree: I love helping women, I love helping families.

Chelsea: I really love my job as a clinical midwife consultant because I get to be an advocate for the women, I get to be a voice for the midwives, I get to influence change.

Shae: I try to bring to women and their families the confidence and reassurance that they're doing the right thing and that no matter how they're doing it, there's no right or wrong way to be a mum, and they're doing a really good job at it.

Female voice: It's really great to help the midwives, teach the midwives, educate the midwives, so that they can then help the women that they're looking after.

Donna: I work in the MGP (Midwifery Group Practice) in Broken Hill. In the group practice we do antenatal, postnatal and labour and birth, so we get to do all aspects of midwifery.

Bree: This offers so much not only for the women and the families but for us as midwives.

Chelsea [laughing, talking to a group of people]: Did we mention that Shae and I went to preschool together?

Chelsea: The sense of camaraderie within our staff and looking after each other is really important to me.

Female voice: The job satisfaction that you get from working in MGP is so good. It's rewarding.

Female voice: We look after them from just after conception to 6 weeks postnatally, so we get to know them and their families really well. We get to do everything for our women which is lovely.

Donna: My heart lies with just looking after women.
