Prepare for the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test
The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test is a computer-based test that you must pass to apply for a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) or a heavy vehicle driving test.
It's similar to the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) you take when going for your Learner driver licence.

You need to answer 45 questions about road rules and road safety related to the heavy vehicle licence class.
Which knowledge test do I take?
You only need to attempt one test. You must attempt the test that is associated with the licence class you're applying for.
There are two different Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Tests:
Heavy vehicle rigid – take this test if you're applying for a Light Rigid (LR), (Medium Rigid) MR or Heavy Rigid (HR) class licence.
Heavy vehicle combination – take this test if you're applying for a Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) class licence.
Extra support for taking the test
Community languages – the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test is available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
A free interpreter service is available to people who need to take the test in other languages. Contact Service NSW on 13 77 88 to arrange an interpreter.

What to do on the day of the test
Plan to arrive at the testing centre in good time for your appointment.

Taking the test
Once you have read through the handbooks and guides, you can book your Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test.
To book your test you can either:
- book online
- visit a service centre and pay the test fee.
If you fail the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test
Depending on availability, you may be able to re-sit the test on the same day, or you can book to sit it another time.
You'll need to pay a test fee each time you attempt the test.
