The Inquiry was formally established by the Minister for Energy under section 21 of the Energy and Utilities Administration Act 1987. The Inquiry was launched because the size of electricity bills was increasing much faster than average wages and paying these bills was taking up an increasing proportion of average household income.
The Inquiry provided several options to reduce electricity network charges and address the sharp price increases in NSW. The preferred options have the potential to halve the expected steep electricity price increases anticipated from 1 July 2011.
