Research and development review underway
Information regarding a review of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s research and development to align with our new focus and priorities.
In June 2024, the Minister for Agriculture announced changes to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to focus on protecting industry from biosecurity risks and support our critical agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors. Consistent with this new focus, the Minister has announced a review of the department’s research and development (R&D).
The review will look at measures to modernise the department’s programs and facilities and be conducted by an independent expert panel comprised of:
- Professor Mary O’Kane AC (Chair): former NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer,
- Daryl Quinlivan AO: former Secretary of the Cth Department of Agriculture,
- Dr James Findlay: former Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, and
- Dr Nick Austin: President of Australia’s Policy Advisory Council for International Agricultural Research.
The objectives of the review are to:
- focus research effort on Government, industry and community priorities and including in keys areas such as climate change, land use conflict, food security and cost of living,
- promote economic growth and community development in the regions,
- identify opportunities in the longer term to diversify R&D investment,
- support capability to deliver statutory responsibilities, training and skills programs and public benefits, and
- improve outcomes for industry, the environment and community.
An initial report with be considered by Government in 2024. A final report will be prepared to support the 2025-26 NSW Budget.
