Throughout 2018 and 2019, visitors to Taronga Zoo can meet the giraffes at the Elephant Temple, between Meerkats and Backyard to Bush.
While the giraffes take a break from their harbour views, the zoo will build two new precincts – the African Savannah and the Congo Forest. Both precincts will have a strong focus on wildlife conservation education.
The African Savannah will be a multi-species habitat, housing a lion breeding facility, an expanded savannah for giraffes, zebras and fennec foxes, and a specialised meerkat encounter space. It is expected to be open from December 2019.
The Congo Forest will open mid-2023. It will be a lush exhibit for the Taronga’s gorilla family, complete with streams and waterfalls.
Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said when the giraffes return in late 2019, they and the other Savannah species will enjoy Sydney Harbour views from their respective habitats.
“It’s also a boon for photographers, who will get stunning shots of not only giraffes against the Sydney Harbour backdrop, but also a pride of lions,” Ms Upton said.
