Eligibility
Who can apply
You must be:
- an individual
- an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident
- identify as a person with disability or who is d/Deaf (see definition below)
- over 18 years of age
- residing in NSW over the last 12 months and;
- have some experience at an emerging or mid-career level. This could include being new to the workforce or seeking a career opportunity in the arts, screen and culture industry.
- not been successful for a Createability Internship in 2021/22 or 2022/23.
The NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 (DIA) defines disability as: “The long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairment which in interaction with various barriers may hinder the full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.”. The term ‘disability’ can also include d/Deaf or hard of hearing people and people with mental health conditions.
Types of projects funded under this grant
The program is for people with disability or who are d/Deaf who will most benefit from an internship to help build their career.
When the project can start and end
Key Dates
- Applications are assessed and a Shortlist is selected (March/April)
- Shortlisted Interns interviewed (April/May)
- Internship recipients and Host Organisations announced (mid-late May)
- Intern Training: Create NSW and Accessible Arts will teach the interns how to get ready for work (May/June)
- Disability Awareness Training: Accessible Arts will provide training to the Host Organisations on how to be more inclusive of people with disabilities (May/June)
- Host organisations and Interns contracted (June)
- Internship: The intern and the organisation will work together on a project that suits their skills and interests. Create NSW will help and guide the interns and the Host Organisations during the internships (dates to be negotiated, between June and December)
The project should be started by 1 June 2024 and the project must be completed by 31 December 2024.
Outcomes for projects funded under this grant
The program is to support 10 paid internships for up to 20 days (160 hours) at hosting arts, screen and cultural organisations. Detail of host organisations and the internship opportunities are at this link. There is also customised training for interns and hosts. The internships are at workplaces that have different jobs to do. This includes helping to make different types of art and helping with administration in the screen and cultural sectors. This includes opportunities in project development, research, production, producing and marketing. As part of your application, you can ask to work with an organisation. We give you a list of organisations. You pick up to two organisations you would like to work with. The listof hosts for the internships are:

Address the eligibility criteria
Each applicant, as part of an application response, must confirm that they meet the eligibility criteria.
Applicants that do not address the eligibility criteria in full may be excluded from the application process at the department's discretion.
Address the assessment criteria
The best applications will be those that clearly address the selection criteria and provide good responses for all the questions asked in the application form. You must show:
- The skills and experience you already have to be 'work ready’.
- The skills you could learn to help your career by doing the internship.

Create NSW has the discretion to accept late applications only where it would not compromise the integrity and competitiveness of the process. Application results
Shortlisted applicants will be notified in March/April 2024. All applicants will be notified of the final outcome of their applications under embargo in May 2024.
Under embargo
When applicants are notified under embargo, they are not permitted to publicise the outcome until the official announcement has been made by the Minister for the Arts or by Create NSW. The embargo period is taken seriously and failure to comply may impact your current and future funding eligibility.

Assessment Stage 1
Applications will be assessed by a panel of Create NSW and Accessible Arts staff against the assessment criteria. The panel:
- will assess and rank all applications against the assessment criteria
- may set aside an application if it is assessed as "materially deficient" in any one of the three assessment criteria
- may ask for a Cultural Review from Create NSW Aboriginal staff or the Aboriginal Arts and Culture Artform Advisory Board based on applications with Aboriginal content and engagement.
Assessment Stage 2
The panel's assessment scores will be amalgamated and presented at the assessment meeting to determine shortlisted applicants.
The panel will consider the assessment criteria, distribution, range, and scale of the initial recommendations.
Create NSW may, at its sole discretion, and at any stage of the application process, do all or any of the following:
- require additional information from an applicant
- change the scope of the requirements of these guidelines
- vary, amend (including by replacement), or terminate the application process
- re-open an application after the closing date, provided it doesn’t give the applicant an advantage over other applicants
- consider any non-conforming or late application
Shortlisted applicants will be notified and involved in the interview stage. Access will be provided for the interviews for shortlisted applicants.
Assessment Stage 3
Host organisations will participate in the interview process of shortlisted internship applicants facilitated by Create NSW, Screen NSW staff, with Accessible Arts also in attendance.
Create NSW may, at its sole discretion, and at any stage of the application process, do all or any of the following:
- require additional information from an applicant
- change the scope of the requirements of these guidelines
- vary, amend (including by replacement), or terminate the application process
- re-open an application after the closing date, provided it doesn’t give the applicant an advantage over other applicants
- consider any non-conforming or late application
Assessment Stage 4
Create NSW will consolidate a report on the outcomes based on quality of the applications and interviews as assessed by the panel.
Note:
- The NSW Government typically receives far more applications than it can support.
- You are not guaranteed an internship even if your application meets the assessment criteria.
Consultation
Create NSW may also request further advice and/or clarification from applicants during the assessment process.
Recommendation
Final recommendations are submitted for the consideration of the Director of the Arts.
Anticipated assessment outcome date is Notifications are anticipated to happen mid-late May 2024.
