The theme for International Women’s Day 2024, "Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress," underscores the importance of ensuring economic inclusion for women and girls worldwide. This theme aligns with the priority focus of the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women, which aims to examine pathways to greater economic inclusion for women.
Program overview
The Connecting Women to Trades program offers grants to eligible organisations to deliver skills, training and career development projects that support women to pursue a career in trades.

There are 26 funded projects identified in the Connecting Women to Trades grant program (round two) conducted by Training Services.
Connecting Women to Trades grant program (round two) aims to address the underrepresentation of women in non-traditional trades and trades experiencing skills shortages.
Funded projects will deliver a wide range of activities to encourage and support more women to access trade qualifications and employment pathways.
The projects’ objective is to boost the number of women in trades through increasing the appeal of trades, removing cultural and societal barriers, and supporting learning to maximise vocational outcomes.
Projects will be delivered through partnerships, aligned to the three pillars of action and outcomes of the Women’s Strategy and include multiple outputs, such as accredited training; careers information; job readiness training; marketing and promotion; work tasters and placements.

This project provides three engaging job rotations over a 12-month period to women participating in the program. Civil Contractors Federation | An Innovative Approach to Improving Participation and Retention of Women in NSW Civil Construction Trades The aim of the project is to attract and retain more women in non-traditional trade roles within the male-dominated civil construction industry with initiatives to promote awareness of trade careers available through targeted career information and industry awareness sessions and by developing a Personal Skills Audit tool and automated Job-Matching service. Participants will complete their Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations and career development training. CPB Contractors Pty Ltd and Ghella Pty Ltd | Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport – Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works CPB Contractors Ghella (CPBG) is building the twin rail tunnels between St Marys and Aerotropolis for the Sydney Metro- Western Sydney Airport project. The program will offer full-time employment opportunities for women participating in work on the infrastructure supporting the construction of two rail tunnels. Cumberland Council | Trade Up to a Better Future The Trade Up to a Better Future project aims to increase the inclusion and diversity of the Australian trade sector. It will do this by targeting the cultural and societal barriers faced by women from culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD) backgrounds and newly arrived communities who wish to pursue trade careers. About the grant
This grant is now closed and is not open to new applications.
The NSW Government has allocated $5 million to help women get a head start in trades as part of its Connecting Women to Trades program.
The grant program aims to achieve three goals outlined in the Women in Trades Strategy 2021-2024:
- Increase the appeal of trades to raise female participation rates.
- Remove social and cultural barriers to women entering trades.
- Support women’s learning to increase their job opportunities.
Round one of the grant program is complete. Round two offers up to $5 million in grants to fund projects aimed at increasing the number of women embarking on a career in trades.
Grants of up to $300,000 are available for projects commencing in February 2023 and delivered over 14 months.
$500,000 from the grant fund will be prioritised to fund projects delivered in NSW local government areas (LGAs) affected by floods in 2022.
Eligibility
Applications will be accepted from group training organisations (GTOs), industry associations, industry training advisory bodies (ITABs), local government, not for profit organisations, registered training organisations (RTOs), trade employers, trade unions and women's networks.
To apply for a grant, an eligible organisation must:
- Be a legal entity with the capacity to contract
- Currently operate in NSW
- Be registered for GST and have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
- Be covered by public liability insurance
- Be financially viable
- Demonstrate partnerships across industry, community organisations and/or women’s trade advocacy networks to co-design and deliver projects
- Have the capability and capacity to deliver projects in line with the Connecting Women to Trades grant guidelines.
Application criteria
Applications for grants will be judged on:
- How the project addresses the pillars of action and desired outcomes of the Women in Trades Strategy 2021-2024
- How the Women in Trades Promising Practice Review will inform the project
- How the project uses networks to recruit and engage suitable participants
- Capability and capacity of organisation to respond to challenges and deliver a project achieving value for money
- A project proposal including the aim of the project, project scope, proposed activities, and project timeline.
