About the statistics
Every year NESA receives a small number of reports on HSC students breaching the rules of HSC exams or school-based HSC assessments.
HSC Exam breaches

In 2019, the following numbers were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 153 cases of non-serious attempts
- 82 cases (projects penalised) for the non-certification of projects
- 34 students with 35 offences for the breach of exam rules and malpractice.
In 2020, the following numbers were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 258 cases of non-serious attempts
- 95 cases (projects penalised) for the non-certification of projects
- 27 students with 32 offences for the breach of exam rules and malpractice.
In 2021, the following numbers were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 150 cases of non-serious attempts
- 41 students with 45 offences for the breach of exam rules and malpractice
- 32 cases (projects penalised) for the non-certification of projects.*
*There was a drop in numbers from previous years as the majority of projects and performances were not submitted to NESA and marked at school.
In 2022, the following numbers were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 100 cases of non-serious attempts
- 57 cases (projects penalised) for the non-certification of projects
- 64 students with 65 offences for the breach of exam rules and malpractice.
In 2023, the following numbers were penalised by the Examination Rules Committee:
- 83 cases of non-serious attempts
- 61 for the non-certification of projects
- 47 students with 50 offences for the breach of exam rules and malpractice.
