About the Port Stephens coastal bar
Shoal Bay (Port Stephens) extends westward for about 18km, with a breadth of from 1.5-5km; it has an area of approximately 100㎢, with adequate depth for a wide range of vessels.
Several streams run into the inlet, the principal ones being Karuah River, at the north-western head, and the Myall River, which empties itself through the northern shore 5km within the entrance, and is the outlet for the large Myall Lakes which extend parallel to the shore for 40km to the north.
The entire area is popular for an assortment of boating.
