Gas standards and notes

Essential resources for the gas fitting industry including standards, advisory notes, compliance requirements, and technical guidance.

Regulatory standards for gas installations

AS/NZS 5601:2022 and AS/NZS 1596:2014 are referenced in the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018 and are legally enforced for gas installations and appliances in NSW. Australian Standards are issued under licence from Standards Australia. Visit the Standards Australia website to purchase a copy of any Standards.

Changes to AS/NZS 5601: Transition Ends 6 March 2025

Amendment 2 was released on 6 September 2024 for both AS/NZS 5601.1:2022 (Gas Installations – General Installations) and AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 (LP Gas installations in caravans and boats for non-propulsive purposes).

Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2018, a six-month transition period is in place until the updated standard becomes mandatory at midnight, 6 March 2025.
