How to register a marriage

Register online via eRegistry 

The quickest way to register NSW marriages is via our online portal, eRegistry, which is available to authorised celebrants.

If you have not used the eRegistry before and you have a celebrant number, you can register here

Once you have registered for a login, you can also use the portal to print marriage forms and order certificates.

Checklist for marriage documents

Notice of Intended Marriage

  • Page 3 — complete 1 to 16
  • Page 4 — signatures and items 17-30
  • Note both forms of identification for each party
  • Page 5 — Notation of transfer when necessary, including the celebrant's name, authorisation number and signature and the date of transfer.

Certificate of Marriage Form 15 (Ceremonial certificate)

  • Number (Serial No.) noted on record keeping form

Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage and Official Certificate of Marriage

  • Declarations for conjugal status completed, signed and witnessed
  • Both copies of official certificate of marriage signed by celebrant, parties and witnesses
  • Full name of witnesses in BLOCK letters (if handwritten)
  • Rites of ceremony noted
  • Clear writing/printing on all documents
  • No abbreviations
  • Any alterations/corrections are initialled

Registration documents

  • Send the following original documents to the Registry by mail (or if using eRegistry, scan and attach to the online notification):
    • Notice of Intended Marriage (pages 3, 4 and 5)
    • Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage and Official Certificate of Marriage
  • If applicable, statutory declarations, court order and parents' consent, interpreter's certificate

How to apply for a marriage certificate on behalf of a couple

Celebrants may apply for certificates on behalf of the couple after they perform the ceremony. This must be done within two (2) months from the date of the ceremony and two (2) months from the date of submission in eRegistry.

To apply for a marriage certificate:

  • order online when using eRegistry online portal
  • mail the application form and fee to the Registry along with marriage paperwork to be lodged for registration.
